Electricity Industry Fundamentals

This course will be particularly valuable to staff new to the electricity industry, and to key business staff responsible for managing energy needs and/or contracts.

This full-day course covers the key concepts of the electricity industry:

  • Industry Overview, including the industry evolution
  • Industry Participants, including Generation, Transmission, Distribution, Retail, Metering
  • Security of Supply, including the background to the risks effecting the NZ electricity industry
  • Industry Governance, the roles of key industry governance bodies
  • Electricity Markets & Nodal Pricing,  introduction to wholesale and ancillary service markets
  • Electricity Supply Agreements, overview of types of retailer pricing and agreements available
  • Demand-side management, overview of its role in current/future markets
  • NZ Emissions Trading Scheme, overview of the key effects of the NZ ETS on the electricity industry

Markets & Nodal Pricing

This one day course provides a detailed look at nodal pricing, by working through the concepts and investigating historical pricing situations. The course commences with simple examples, gradually adding concepts, to provide attendees with sufficient tools to dissect real-life pricing situations.

This full-day course is appropriate for those with a familiarity of the electricity market who wish to gain more detailed knowledge on nodal pricing and.provides the following key learning objectives:

  • Understanding of the terminology relating to Nodal Pricing
  • Understanding of the dispatch and pricing models used in NZ
  • Understanding of the impact of energy and reserve offers and losses on dispatch and pricing
  • Understanding of the impact of constraints (i.e. reserves, energy & lines) on dispatch and pricing
  • Understanding the pool surplus and financial transmission rights (FTRs)

Introduction to Emissions

This half-day course provides an introductory look at the Emissions Trading Scheme as well emissions reporting associated with Corporate Sustainability Reporting.  This course is appropriate for anyone who wishes to gain an introductory, high level view of emissions.

This course provides an overview of:

  • The NZ Emissions Trading Scheme and how this compares internationally
  • Specific obligatory emissions and reporting requirements
  • Corporate sustainability emissions such as those associated with travel, energy and waste
  • Implementing an emissions management plan within your business
